Every cat has its own personality, but breed can give us useful clues about coat care, activity, grooming and the type of home a cat may enjoy. Here are ten widely loved pedigreed breeds, with a quick look at what makes each one special.

Maine Coon
Large, social and wonderfully expressive. Maine Coons are often called gentle giants and usually enjoy interactive play, climbing and being part of family life.

Ragdoll
Ragdolls are known for their soft coats, blue eyes and relaxed nature. Many enjoy staying close to their people and tend to suit calm indoor homes.

Persian
Persians are calm, affectionate cats with beautiful long coats. Their glamorous look comes with a little extra work: regular brushing and eye care are important.

Exotic Shorthair
Exotic Shorthairs share the round face and easygoing personality associated with Persians, but their shorter coat is generally easier to maintain.

Devon Rex
With large ears, a curly coat and a mischievous personality, the Devon Rex tends to be playful, people-oriented and happiest when there is something interesting happening.

Abyssinian
Abyssinians are athletic, curious cats that like to explore. They are usually happiest in homes that give them opportunities to climb, play and investigate.

British Shorthair
British Shorthairs have a plush coat, round features and a famously composed expression. They are often affectionate without being overly demanding.

Siberian
Siberians are powerful long-haired cats with thick coats and playful personalities. Regular grooming and plenty of activity help keep them comfortable and engaged.
American Shorthair
American Shorthairs are sturdy, adaptable cats that are often easygoing companions. Routine play, balanced nutrition and weight monitoring are important.

Russian Blue
Russian Blues are admired for their silver-blue coats and green eyes. They can be reserved at first, but many form very strong bonds with the people they trust.
Popularity should never be the only reason to choose a cat. Think about grooming, activity level, space, time, health needs and the individual cat in front of you. Mixed-breed and rescued cats can be equally wonderful companions.
Learn the breed, but get to know the cat. Personality, health, nutrition and everyday care matter far more than a name on a pedigree.
