Cats may all share the same love for naps, sunny windows and mysterious 3 AM zoomies, but every breed has its own personality. Some cats love being carried around, some prefer watching you from across the room, and some will happily follow you everywhere you go.
If you are thinking about bringing a cat home, or you are simply curious about the different types of cats, here is a simple introduction to some of the best-known cat breeds.
Fluffy, calm and usually quite happy with a peaceful indoor life, Persian cats are famous for their long coat and sweet expression. They need regular grooming and good eye and coat care.
Maine Coons are large, friendly and often surprisingly gentle. Their thick coat needs regular brushing, and their large body means nutrition and healthy weight management are especially important.
Siamese cats are social, intelligent and famously talkative. They often form very strong bonds with their people and usually enjoy interactive play and plenty of attention.
Ragdolls are known for their gentle temperament, soft coat and beautiful blue eyes. Many love human company and fit well into calm indoor homes.
With their round faces and dense coat, British Shorthairs have a very distinctive look. They are often calm and independent, but because they can be less active, portion control matters.
Bengals are energetic, athletic and curious. Their beautiful spotted coat gives them a wild appearance, but at home they need lots of play, climbing and mental stimulation.
Himalayan cats combine the long coat of a Persian with the colour-point look associated with Siamese cats. They are generally gentle and need regular grooming.
Scottish Folds are recognisable for their folded ears. They are often affectionate and easygoing. Because the folded-ear trait is linked with cartilage and joint problems, responsible breeding and veterinary care are especially important.
Sphynx cats may look hairless, but they still need regular skin care. They are often very social, playful and fond of warmth.
Russian Blues are known for their silvery-blue coat, green eyes and quiet nature. They may be reserved with strangers but can become very attached to their family.
Abyssinians are active, curious and always interested in what is happening around them. They usually enjoy climbing, playing and exploring.
Bombay cats have a sleek black coat and striking eyes. They are often social, playful and people-oriented.
American Shorthairs are typically adaptable, easygoing cats. Their short coat is relatively easy to maintain, and they usually do well with regular play and a balanced diet.
Think of the Exotic Shorthair as a short-haired relative of the Persian. They share the same round-faced, sweet appearance but their shorter coat is easier to maintain.
These large, strong cats have a thick coat built for cold weather. They are often friendly, confident and good climbers.
Birmans are gentle, social cats with blue eyes, colour-pointed coats and distinctive white paws. They usually enjoy being close to their family.
Burmese cats are affectionate, playful and often very people-focused. Many remain energetic and curious well into adulthood.
Oriental Shorthairs are closely related to Siamese cats. They are usually intelligent, active, social and very expressive.
Turkish Angoras are elegant, active cats with a fine, silky coat. They are often intelligent and enjoy being involved in family life.
Not every wonderful cat belongs to a recognised pedigree. Domestic shorthairs and India's local cats come in an amazing range of colours, patterns and personalities. Many are hardy, intelligent and beautifully adapted to their environment.
There is no single best cat breed. A good match depends on your home, lifestyle, time for grooming, activity level and the individual cat's personality. And sometimes, the cat chooses you before you ever get a chance to choose the breed.
Breed can tell us a little about a cat, but good nutrition, preventive healthcare, play, grooming and a safe home matter far more. Every cat is an individual, and getting to know their own habits is part of the joy of living with them.
