Most dog owners underestimate how fast heat stroke can hit. One minute your dog's panting a bit harder than usual on a walk, and fifteen minutes later you're staring at a very sick animal wondering what went wrong.
Dogs don't cool off the way we do. We sweat through our skin — they don't. A dog's main cooling tool is panting, with a tiny assist from the sweat glands in their paw pads. That's it. So when the air is hot, humid, or stagnant, their cooling system gets overwhelmed quickly, and their core temperature can climb into dangerous territory within minutes.
Once it does, the damage isn't limited to "feeling unwell." Heat stroke can injure the brain, kidneys, liver, heart, and clotting system. Severe cases kill dogs. The difference between a close call and a tragedy is almost always how fast the owner noticed and reacted.
A healthy dog runs at around 101–102.5°F. Heat stroke is what happens when their body temperature pushes well past that and won't come back down on its own. This isn't the same as a dog being tired or warm after a walk. A dog in real trouble can go from panting to collapsed in the time it takes you to find your car keys.
Every dog can overheat, but some are walking red flags in summer:
If your dog ticks more than one of those boxes, your margin for error is small.
Heat stroke rarely comes out of nowhere. It almost always traces back to one of these:
The phrase I hear most after an emergency is "it was only for a little while." That's usually all it takes.
Early on, heat stroke can look like a dog who's just a bit too warm. That's the dangerous part — it doesn't announce itself.
Keep an eye out for:
It tends to go in that order, roughly. Restless and desperate-looking first, then weak, then unresponsive. Don't wait to see which stage you're in.
If you think your dog is overheating, move. Don't debate it.
1. Get them out of the heat. Shade, AC, a tiled floor indoors — wherever is coolest and closest.
2. Start cooling them down, gently. Use cool or room-temperature water, not ice water. Soak their belly, armpits, groin, and paws. A fan blowing over wet fur helps a lot. The goal is steady cooling, not a shock.
3. Offer water if they're alert. Small sips. Don't pour it into the mouth of a dog who's weak or out of it — that's how you end up with aspiration on top of heat stroke.
4. Get to a vet. Even if your dog looks better after ten minutes of cooling. Organ damage from heat stroke can show up hours later, and by then you're playing catch-up.
Controlled cooling beats aggressive cooling. Every time.
Call the vet and drive if you see any of this:
Don't finish cooling at home first. Cool in the car on the way if you can.
At the clinic, expect some combination of oxygen, IV fluids, continuous temperature monitoring, and bloodwork to check how the liver, kidneys, and clotting system are holding up. If the dog is seizing or in shock, they'll treat that too. The vet isn't just lowering the temperature — they're watching for the delayed damage heat stroke loves to cause, especially clotting problems and kidney injury.
Prevention is boring and it works.
If the heat is getting to you, it's already gotten to your dog — and they can't tell you. They're closer to the ground, they're wearing a fur coat, and their only real cooling trick is panting.
Pay attention to their breathing, their energy, their drool, the look in their eye. Heat stroke is one of the few emergencies where the owner almost always sees the warning signs first. The only question is whether they act on them.
Heavy panting, weakness, confusion, or collapse in hot weather — cool the dog, call the vet, go. That's the whole playbook.
